What is an M3U playlist?
An M3U playlist is a plain text file — or more usually a web link ending in .m3u or .m3u8 — that lists all the channels and on-demand content in your IPTV subscription. When you give that link to a player app, the app reads the list and loads every channel for you. You don't open the file yourself; the player does the work.
Because it's just one URL, an M3U link is the most universal way to load IPTV. Almost every player understands it, which is why providers hand it out as the default. The downside is that an M3U link is a long, fixed address — if your subscription details change, the whole link changes, so you re-add it rather than editing a password.
What are Xtream Codes?
Xtream Codes (sometimes written "Xtream Codes API") is a different way to deliver the same channels. Instead of one long link, your provider gives you three short pieces: a server URL (the address of the service), a username, and a password. You type those into a player that supports Xtream Codes and it builds the channel list, films and TV guide for you.
Most modern players — IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate and others — prefer Xtream Codes because it's tidier and a little smarter: it separates live TV, films and series into their own sections automatically, and if your password is reset you only update one field instead of pasting a whole new link.
M3U vs Xtream Codes: which should you use?
Both deliver identical channels, so you can't go wrong — use whichever your player offers and your provider supports. As a simple rule: if your player has an "Xtream Codes" option, choose that; if it only offers "Add M3U URL", use the M3U link.
- Choose Xtream Codes for the cleanest setup — live TV, movies and series land in separate tabs, and updates are easier.
- Choose an M3U URL for maximum compatibility — older or basic players almost always accept it.

What is an EPG (the IPTV TV guide)?
EPG stands for Electronic Programme Guide — it's the grid that shows what's playing now and what's on later, just like the guide on cable or satellite. In IPTV the EPG is delivered separately from the channels (usually as an XMLTV file), which is why your channels can work perfectly while the guide is still blank.
A good EPG turns a long channel list into a proper TV experience: you can see what's on, scroll forward through the schedule, and — if your provider supports it — use catch-up to watch programmes that have already aired. When you load Xtream Codes, the EPG usually comes automatically; with a plain M3U you sometimes have to add the EPG link by hand.
How to add an M3U playlist to your player
The exact wording differs per app, but the steps are the same everywhere. Using IPTV Smarters Pro as the example:
- Open the player and choose to add a new user or playlist.
- Select the "Load Your Playlist or File/URL" (M3U URL) option.
- Give it any name you like, then paste the full M3U URL your provider sent — exactly, with no spaces.
- Confirm, and the app loads your channels and on-demand content. Give it a minute on the first load.
How to add an Xtream Codes login to your player
Xtream Codes setup is just as quick and is the route most players recommend:
- Open the player and choose to add a new user or playlist.
- Select the "Login with Xtream Codes API" option.
- Enter a name, then type the server URL, username and password your provider gave you.
- Confirm — the app builds live TV, films and series into separate sections and pulls in the EPG automatically.
How to set up or fix the EPG
If your channels load but the guide is empty, the EPG just needs a moment or a nudge. Try these in order:
- Wait: on the first load the EPG can take a few minutes to download — leave the app open.
- Refresh it: most players have an "Update EPG" or "Reload guide" option in settings.
- Add the EPG URL manually: if your provider supplies a separate XMLTV/EPG link, paste it into the player's EPG settings.
- Check your provider supports an EPG at all — if they don't publish one, no player can show a guide.
Common M3U and Xtream Codes problems (and fixes)
Almost every setup issue is one of a handful of things — and none of them mean the player is broken:
- No channels at all: a typo in the link or login. Re-copy the M3U URL or the server URL/username/password carefully — these are case-sensitive.
- "Playlist expired" or "link not working": your subscription has lapsed or the login changed. Ask your provider for a fresh link or password.
- Channels work, guide is empty: that's an EPG issue, not a channel issue — see the section above.
- Buffering on some channels: usually internet speed or the provider's server load, not the M3U/Xtream itself — try a wired connection.
- Only some content shows: with Xtream Codes, check the live/movies/series tabs separately; with M3U, the provider may group content differently.
Is it safe to paste an M3U URL? Keeping your login private
Your M3U link and your Xtream Codes login are effectively the keys to your subscription — anyone who has them can use your account. Treat them like a password: don't post them in public forums, screenshots or social media, and don't share them with strangers who ask.
If you ever think your link has leaked (for example, you see your account being used on more devices than you own), contact your provider and ask them to reset your login. A reputable provider can issue a new M3U URL or password quickly.
